WHAT TO EXPECT WITH ONLINE THERAPY

As a therapist who is certified and trained in online counseling, I use this technology to help people access mental health services. My clients who have seen me in my office have used it on occasions when they are traveling, or if they have moved to a new region.

The set up is quite easy. No techie experience is necessary. I guide you to make sure you have the right browser and connection. Then, it's a matter of clicking on the link to my secure web portal that hosts thousands of doctors, therapists and health professionals who confidentially communicate with their patients daily.

Yet I am mindful that online therapy has its limitations. For instance, face-to-face interaction between a therapist and client allows the therapist to observe the client's dress, demeanor, facial expressions and other nonverbal cues, which can help in assessment, diagnosis & treatment. Online therapy may sometimes impede this process.

Also, it's important to understand that not all problems and conditions are suited for online therapy. Referrals may be made to other practitioners or facilities for in-person treatment when appropriate.

Benefits of online Therapy

  • Convenient - If you are busy or have difficulty getting to appointments, online therapy sessions are conducted at the convenience of your home or office.
  • Secure - We use state of the art HIPAA-compliant software so your identity is protected and all communication is confidential.
  • No Fancy Equipment - All you need is connectivity to the Internet, and a modern computer, notebook or laptop to start online therapy.
  • Greater Scheduling Flexibility - Because appointments are easier to arrange for online therapy, therapist and client may have greater flexibility when scheduling sessions.
  • Time-Effective - You don't have to take time off of work; you can easily fit an appointment into your workday.
  • Cost-Effective - Also, when online you are more likely to not waste valuable time. You save time and money in transportation to and from the appointment.
  • Anonymous - You never have to be seen in real life by your therapist. If you are self-conscious, have a high-profile that you want to keep low, or you open up best when there is space, online therapy may be preferable to you.
  • Fairly affordable - Online therapists often offer affordable treatment options for those who are not covered by health insurance.
  • Two-Way Conferencing - Some of my clients may choose to bring in family members for a session. I have the ability to schedule 2-way conferencing so that a person from another location may join us for the session.
